Auckland’s Westlake Boys High School has taken the International School Sport Federation (ISF) Football World Cup in Dalian, China, by storm, showcasing their exceptional skills and determination. The team, representing New Zealand, has notched up impressive victories against Uganda and Hungary, but their sights are firmly set on a crucial win against Saudi Arabia to secure second place in their group.
A Journey of Grit and Resilience
Going into the tournament, the unseeded Westlake team was drawn into a competitive pool alongside Uganda, Hungary, England, and Saudi Arabia. Despite the odds stacked against them, the boys have displayed unwavering resilience and determination, amassing six points from their opening three matches.
In their first encounter, the Kiwis faced a formidable Ugandan side, rebounding from an early setback to secure a 6-3 victory. Carlos Takayama’s hat-trick and Troy Putt’s crucial goals propelled them to success. Their second match against England presented a stern challenge, with the English taking the upper hand early on. However, the New Zealanders refused to surrender, fighting back to draw level 2-2 before conceding a late winner.
