James Mitchell, consumer prices manager at Stats NZ, attributed the surge to factors such as increased demand for travel and rising operating costs for airlines. “Kiwis traveling overseas in April would have experienced higher airfares than those who traveled in March,” Mitchell said.

While airfares soared, overseas accommodation prices experienced a moderate decrease of 4.9% in April 2024 compared to March 2024. This decline suggests that competition among accommodation providers may have driven prices down, providing some relief to travelers on a budget.
The decrease brings overseas accommodation prices to a 30.8% increase compared to April 2019, indicating a slower rate of growth than international airfares.
